DIY Marketing vs. Hiring Help: When to Do Each

If you've ever wondered whether you should handle your own marketing or hand it off to someone else, you’re not alone, and we have some good news: there's no wrong answer. Just a right one for where you're at right now.

Some business owners genuinely love doing their own marketing, and they're good at it. Others find it draining, confusing, or like one more thing on a never-ending to-do list. (Both are completely normal!) The trick is figuring out which camp you're actually in, not which one you think you're supposed to be in.

Signs DIY Marketing is still working for you

Taking care of your own marketing isn't a phase you need to grow out of, and for a lot of small businesses, it's a genuinely good long-term fit. A few signs it's still serving you well:

You have the time. Not "I'll squeeze it in at 11 pm" time, but actual, sustainable time built into your week.

You enjoy it. Maybe you like writing posts, playing with graphics, or seeing what resonates with your audience. If it feels more like a creative outlet than a chore, that's worth protecting.

Your results are steady. You're posting consistently, your engagement is holding, and you're not white-knuckling it every month, wondering if this is even working.

If that's you, keep going. You don't need to hire someone just because that's what "serious" businesses do.

Signs it might be time to bring in help

On the flip side, there are some pretty clear signals that DIY has quietly stopped working, even if you haven't said it out loud yet:

You're avoiding it. If marketing has become the task you keep pushing to next week, that avoidance is telling you something.

It's inconsistent. A great week followed by three weeks of silence isn't a strategy so much as survival mode. And your audience notices the gaps.

You know what to do, but not how to actually do it. This one trips up a lot of smart business owners. You've read the advice, you get the concepts, but turning that into consistent execution is a different skill entirely. (Why does META keep changing!?)

You simply don't have the hours. Sometimes it's not about knowledge or motivation at all. It's just math. There are only so many hours in a day, and marketing keeps losing to the parts of the business that feel more urgent.

None of these mean you've failed at marketing. What they usually mean is that you've outgrown doing it entirely on your own.

The middle ground: what if you're not ready for either?

Here's the thing - it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. There's a real middle ground, and it's often the right place to start.

Training and workshops exist for exactly this. Instead of handing your marketing off completely, you (or your team) learn the skills and systems to run it yourselves, with a clearer strategy and a lot less guesswork. It's a good fit if you want to stay hands-on but need a plan and some structure. That's exactly what we built STGP's training courses, webinars and 1-on-1 coaching for.

Upping your skills and knowledge can be a great option if you’re a business owner or small team that can't outsource but knows you need more than what you're currently working with.

Handing it off doesn't mean losing your voice

If you do decide it's time to bring in help, here's the reassurance you need: outsourcing your marketing doesn't mean losing control of it, and it definitely doesn't mean losing your voice.

A good partnership should still sound like you. The best marketing support doesn't replace your personality with generic copy; it learns your voice, your customers, and your community, and builds from there. You stay in the loop. You still make the calls that matter. The only thing that changes is that the execution stops falling entirely on your shoulders.

So, which camp are you in?

Maybe you read this and felt confident: DIY is still the right call, and that's great. Maybe you recognized a few too many of those "time to get help" signs. Or maybe you landed somewhere in the middle, and you just need a bit of training.

If you're not really sure which camp you're in, let's talk it through. There's no pressure, no judgment, and no obligation. Just a conversation about where your marketing is at and what actually makes sense for your business right now.
